BMR and TDEE, and why the calculator gives you both

Any calorie calculator worth using gives you two numbers, and they are frequently confused. One describes the floor of your energy expenditure. The other describes the whole of it. Building a target from the wrong one is the most common way these tools get misused.

The distinction

BMR — Basal Metabolic Rate. The energy your body uses at complete rest, doing nothing but staying alive: circulation, breathing, temperature, cell repair, brain activity.

TDEE — Total Daily Energy Expenditure. BMR plus everything else — digestion, movement, deliberate exercise, and fidgeting.

What makes up the difference

TDEE is conventionally broken into four components, and their relative sizes surprise most people.

Two points follow from that table. The first is that BMR dominates — most of your daily energy goes on simply existing. The second is that non-exercise activity varies enormously between individuals and often exceeds deliberate exercise. Someone on their feet all day may burn considerably more than a desk worker who trains four times a week.

Why BMR is estimated, not measured

Measuring true BMR requires indirect calorimetry in controlled conditions — overnight fast, thermally neutral room, complete rest. Calculators do not do that. They use an equation fitted to population data, taking height, weight, age and sex as inputs.

These equations are good on average and imprecise individually. Two people matching on every input can have genuinely different basal rates, driven by lean mass, thyroid function, genetics and factors not fully understood. An estimate that is off by a couple of hundred calories is entirely normal.

Treat the output as a starting hypothesis

The number the calculator gives you is a place to begin, not a fact about your body. Eat at it consistently for two or three weeks, track weight under stable conditions, and adjust from what actually happens. Your own data beats any equation.

Which number to build a target from

TDEE, essentially always. It represents what you actually spend. A deficit or surplus is applied to TDEE, not to BMR.

Eating at or below BMR is a common and counterproductive mistake. It creates a deficit far larger than intended, and sustained very low intake brings the problems covered on calorie deficits done safely: difficulty meeting micronutrient needs, disproportionate lean mass loss, and poor adherence.

Both numbers move

Neither is fixed. As you lose weight there is less tissue to maintain, so BMR falls and TDEE with it — which is why a deficit that worked in month one produces less in month four. Ageing gradually lowers BMR, largely through loss of lean mass, which is part of why resistance training matters more with each decade. Recalculating every few kilograms keeps the target honest.
